Distinguished and Famous people from Central Wheatbelt

🌿 Rica Erickson

Rica Erickson taught at Bolgart and married local farmer Sydney Erickson in 1936. Farm and family responsibilities accompanied a remarkable range of interests: botany, illustration, conservation and local history. Her self-illustrated Orchids of the West appeared in 1951, followed by studies of triggerplants and carnivorous plants. Working through the Country Women's Association and other community networks, she argued for protection of bushland and wildflowers. The Bolgart years connect her scientific curiosity with practical local action, including the effort to retain native vegetation beside roads and within reserves.

🎨 Robert Juniper

Robert Juniper was born at Merredin in 1929 and became a distinctive interpreter of Western Australian landscape. Paintings, murals, sculpture and other public commissions brought his work into many settings beyond galleries. His later home was at Darlington, where he also helped establish an arts festival originally intended to raise money for the volunteer bushfire brigade. The wheatbelt connection is his birthplace; the mature career ranged across the state and beyond it. Abstract forms and colour allowed him to suggest the character of landscape without simply recording every hill and tree.

🏉 Leon Davis

Leon Davis spent his first fourteen years at Northam before football took him to Perth and then Melbourne. A Noongar man with continuing connections to Ballardong Country, he played 225 games for Collingwood across twelve seasons. Much of his career was spent in attack, before a successful move to defence late in his playing years. Returning home with family prompted reflections on childhood places and the importance of reconnecting with Country. The story has a firm wheatbelt foundation: Northam was his hometown, not simply a place included in a broad sporting recruitment zone.
